07.04.2016 The Blue Hepatica Flower charity campaign to recognize veterans to be launched today

Today the Estonian Association of Wounded Warriors and Women’s Voluntary Defence Organization launch their charity campaign “Let Us Salute!” organzed every spring. The campaign invites people to wear Blue Hepatica flower pins to recognize the veterans of the Estonian Defence Forces and Defence League and their family members.  The initiative is related to the celebration of the Veterans Day on 23 April and collects also donations for the Estonian Association of Wounded Warriors.

“Our mission is to inform the Estonian nation who today’s veterans are. This spring we would like to share the stories of the veterans who have left military service and are active in other fields of life. Their present colleagues and friends may not know of their mission experience; by telling their stories we can show the respect of society”, said Staff Sergeant and veteran Rasmus Penno, member of the Estonian Association of Wounded Warriors.

Nowadays veterans have participated in international military operations and in peacekeeping operations in Croatia, Lebanon, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Central African Republic, Iraq, Afghanistan, Mali, Gulf of Aden, Israel, Syria, Macedonia, and in the Mediterranean Sea region.

“This year’s campaign will be even more powerful than in previous years, with various events where we’ll be present with Blue Hepatica flower pins: today in the Scouts Marching, in the Blue Hepatica Run both in Tallinn and Tartu, at Veterans Rock in Vabaduse Väljak and elsewhere. There will be several events organized by the Women’s Voluntary Defence Organization throughout Estonia, so that there is something for everyone”, said Rasmus Penno.

The Estonian Association of Wounded Warriors uses the proceeds from the sales of Blue Hepatica products to support the rehabilitation, sports and further education of wounded veterans and their family members. In addition, the association’s contribution to the rehabilitation of servicemen benefits all patients in the rehabilitation treatment system.

Through the purchase of Blue Hepatica flower pins in the spring of 2014 and 2015, tens of thousands of people have donated around 170,000 euros to the Estonian Association of Wounded Warriors. The proceeds from previous campaigns were used to purchase mobility aids and other rehabilitation aids for the East-Tallinn Hospital Clinic for Medical Rehabilitation and for the Haapsalu Neurological Rehabilitation Centre.

Each Hepatica pin is uniquely crafted by people with special needs all over Estonia and is distributed by the Hea Hoog Foundation.

From 7 April to 1 May, Blue Hepatica flower pins and wristbands are sold in Selver supermarkets, Rahva Raamat bookshops, T-pilet ticket offices in Tallinn and Tartu, as well as in Olerex gas stations, R-kiosks, Tallinn Airport shops and on Nordica flights.
